The Tangorin Android app is now available at Google Play:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.tangorin.app
It includes the the General dictionary (now called Words), Kanji and Examples.
No internet connection required.
The app needs additional 160MB of storage to run the database after installation.
Some core dictionary features like vocabulary lists, conjugation, or various input methods are not yet included but will be included in future updates.
It took a while to bring it to a steady releasable version. Mainly because I had to write it myself and it was my first time developing for Android. It's still rough around the edges but I decided to put it online anyways. Bugs are bound to happen, sorry for that, please report them here or at contact@tangorin.com and they will be fixed in the next update.
For now it's only available for mobile phones running Android Jelly Bean (4.1.0) and up. Some of the core features required to run the database are missing in previous versions but I'm working on making it compatible with older devices as well as tablets.
iOS version coming soon.

Tue, 12 Nov 2013 22:06:19 +0000 Thanks for making this app. Users of Android devices are in dire need of a learner-centered Japanese reference tool like Tangorin to use offline.
Do you plan on implementing the full set of website features? Tangorin's fantastic cascading panels and the ability to bookmark any of them are great. If we could get a program that functioned like the website plus had the ability to share our word/sentence collections to SRS apps... it'd be like heaven sent.
For the bug report: using a phone with a five inch screen all of the buttons appear //very// tiny. It's pretty difficult to use.

The main goal is to make the app and website have the same functionality and the ability to sync vocabulary lists between one another. There are many other features I'd like to include but I'm not going to make any promises yet.
I decided to release it early and work daily on frequent updates that address the user feedback.
The issue with tiny fonts and buttons will be addressed in the next update.

I have been using this website ever since I started learning Japanese (about two to three years ago) and it has always been my number one reference.
I have been so bummed by the lack of decent English-Japanese dictionary in Android that I was "forced" to get an iPod for the Apple app 'Imi wa' for portability purposes (Denshi jisho-s are quite expensive so I opted for the cheaper iPod). I can now finally let go of my iPod (if ever it breaks) and use my phone instead!
Count on me to give feedbacks for improvements. :3

That's exactly why I went for Android first.
First updated version is now live. Fixed small fonts issue on high resolution devices and minor UI changes.

Thank you for making android app! I'm using a number of them from google store and must say that I like yours very much because it well structured and has a lot of examples.
But it will be better if you'll add some options:
- I've got samsung note 3 with fullHD screen (but its size is not so big as tablets') and all letters, especially kanji in words are too small.
- when I click on kanji and kanji information and examples page opens, I see a list of words using this kanji. But when I click on any kanji in these words I can't get it's info, just close all information window (I don't like "the long press method" using copy/pase).
Anyway it's good app. Thank you.

Any chance of getting this on the website or the Android version: http://forum.koohii.com/viewtopic.php?id=11882
The beta version of jisho.org ( http://beta.jisho.org/ ) has this feature.
Thanks.

Yes, this will be an option. First on the new version of the website, and then on the app. I can't really say when it will be ready yet.

Thanks!

I use iPhone and am waiting for the iPhone version. Many Japanese learners in Asia use iPhones. When will it be available? Soon, I hope!

Soon.

Hi! Sorry, I just sent you a lengthy email before checking to see if you had a dev forum. Sorry! Anyways, I am looking forward to the updates including the ability to add to the Vocabulary lists. I'll be sure to pledge support when that function becomes available. Cheers!

i wonder maybe you can add alternative radical table. instead of the traditional one which is sorting according to the number of radical, maybe sorting according to the similarity of the radical will decrease user searching the corresponding radical.

This doesn't really belong in this thread but it's a great idea. Thanks.

Wed, 02 Apr 2014 05:00:56 +0000 Can you help me?
For some reason sometimes Tangorin app doesn't start saying "This application is not installed". Then I go to Google Play and install it again. I'm not very sure what's the reason of such behavior. Sometimes my smartphone restarts itself, when I connect it to PC via usb cable. Probably, it messes up Tangorin data somehow at that time.
Android version is 4.11, core version is 3.4.0, Jelly Bean

Hi Gregory, wondering if you had a rough idea when the next release of the android app was happening and what was in it?

bober Thu, 03 Apr 2014 06:38:37 +0000
@Takezo
I don't know what "core version is 3.4.0" really means. Tangorin requires at least Android 4.1.
@singlecelled
I can't predict when the next version will be ready, few weeks. Don't expect any dramatic changes. I'm working on a new version for the website simultaneously. It takes time.

Wonderful. Thanks for the update.

Thank you for your reply! Tangorin is working just fine, I just think it's not "sudden_restart-proof", meaning that if for some reason mobile device restarts itself, then Tangorin doesn't start anymore and I have to delete it and install again. That's not a big problem, my phone doesn't restart often (only when I connect it to PC by USB while some apps are working) and re-install doesn't take much time. It's ok If it's hard to fix, your app is still great!

@Takezo
Thanks for pointing this out. I'll look into it. Can't promise anything.

Thank you! I'm sorry for being so annoying, but can I ask for something else instead? You see, in my case your app is going great with japanese core words from iKnow and Anki - I read examples with recently learned new words and somehow get accustomed to the context and the word itself. I would greatly appreciate (and hopefully other users too) if there will be two check points in Settings with options to hide furigana and translation - something like "Hide Furigana" and "Hide translation". Since a tap on a word can reveal its meaning and reading, examples without furigana and translation can greatly help reading "bare" japanese. ps: no problem with previously mentioned app crash situation, I can deal with it, but hiding furigana and translation can tremendously help I think. Though there are other apps that provide examples where one can hide furigana and translation (like kotoba-chan), but they don't provide tapping on words, which I believe is extremely useful (that's why I love your app).

That's already prepared for the next version.

Fri, 20 Jun 2014 08:03:17 +0000 Hello, any ideas when a new version is coming out?

bober Mon, 23 Jun 2014 08:30:54 +0000
I've set a deadline at the end of this week.

Mon, 07 Jul 2014 12:03:15 +0000 It has been mentioned before, but I wanted to insist on the idea of being able to login and thus to have access to the vocabulary lists. Any chances this is happening? Thanks for the hard work, by the way.
